CHAPTER TWELVE

Shaniqua

I had moved in with Bridget three weeks ago and it was great! She let me be me and I didn’t have to pretend to be someone that I wasn’t. I took care of all da kids, including mine and hers while she worked. I didn’t work, but I received food stamps and child support to help me. I got three checks for almost $750 each, so I had some money saved up. I also received almost $900 in food stamps which helped me to not have to worry about how I was gonna pay for groceries. The clinic also gave me WIC for all three kids so I could buy their milk and AJ’s baby food.

I hadn’t spoken to Ant once since I moved out of my mom’s house. I never called him, or anything, but I did call da child support office to let them know that I moved. I wanted ta make sure that they sent ma checks ta me and not ma mom. Another reason I hadn’t been calling Ant was because I’d been chillin’ wit Bridget’s brother, Cisco. Cisco was tall, with a light brown complexion, pretty grey eyes and a sexy ass smile. I wasn’t tryna be wit him or anything. We would just kick it from time ta time.

Cisco and I were watching television one night while Bridget was out with her friends. We were watching Hot Tub Time Machine and the movie was hilarious!

“Hey, why you don’t have no man?” Cisco asked.

“Did you see all my kids? Do you think I need a man at 17 wit three kids?” I asked.

“Well, I was kinda wondering why you so young and got so many kids already. I mean were they giving them away two for one or somethin’?” he asked and began to laugh.

“HA! HA! I was in love wit dis guy and he was my first love, so shit just happened ya know?” I said.

“Well, where he at? I mean you got three kids fa da nigga, so where he at?” he asked.

“I don’t know and as long as I get my check on time I ain’t gon worry bout him!” I said.

“So, you ain’t seeing nobody?” he asked.

“Nope and I don’t want nobody either! I had my fill of men for a while, so trust me, I’m good!” I said.

“Well okay then,” he said.

We continued watching the movie until the twins woke up for a bottle. I got up to go check on them and noticed that Cisco had gotten up too.

“Where you going?” I asked him.

“I’m going ta help you! In case you ain’t noticed, there are four kids in there, so I figured you would need ma help. But if you can handle it I’ll go back to watch the movie,” he said and turned around to head back to the living room.

“Wait! Sorry, but can you please give me a hand?” I asked.

“Sure!” he said and we broke into laughter.

He picked up his niece and AJ while I was left with the twins.
